Xintianantang Church, former Union Church, built in 1886, located at the intersection of South Suzhou Road and Yuanmingyuan Road, was a Catholic church in Romanesque and Gothic style. The church was expanded in 1901, and it merited equal popularity of Holy Trinity Church at that time. British philosopher Bertrand Russell gave a speech here in 1920. The church was marred in a fire in January 2007, now it is renovated and restored to its original appearance. [This church is not open currently.]
The building beside the church was formerly the church's apartments, built in 1899. This building is in neoclassical Palladian style, featuring distinctive window treatment, heavy balustraded roof, and arched pediment ornamented with flower and garland.
