The New North Gate

This photo was taken around 1900. The picture shows The New North Gate, or The Gate of Tide-Blockage, (Chinese phonetic writing: Xinbeimen, which is still in use in maps today). The gate was constructed in 1860. By 1890, however, it was completely blocked by warehouses, and the moat was almost dry and impossible for navigation. All this reflected that the city walls were out of date.
