The intersection of Nanjing Road and the Bund in 1893

The now famous Nanjing Road was initially a narrow street called Garden Lane or Park Lane, which connected the Bund with the First Horse Race Course. Shanghai Municipal Council broadened the street in 1865 and named it after Nanjing (Nanking), capital of Jiangsu Province. This picture shows the intersection of Nanjing Road and the Bund in 1893.
