Shanghai Great World is an entertainment complex and one of the landmarks in Shanghai, which was built in 1917 by the rich businessman Huang Chujiu. In 1930, it was taken over by Huang Jinrong, the chief of the then Shanghai's Green Gang. At the time, all kinds of operas, plays, films, magics and circuses from all over the country were staged here, the Great World thus became very popular and developed into the greatest pleasure place in the Far East then. the Great World was taken over by the government after 1949 and was once renamed Shanghai People's Amusement Park. Due to its cheap entrance ticket, the Great World had been the main amusement place for Shanghailanders and tourists before 1980. Now the Great World is not only an amusement place, but also the only place in China for the creation of Guinness Records.
